Master musician Trilok Gurtu connects with the blazing trail of Armenian Pianist -

Tigran Hamasyan

  They met in Paris this March when Tigran’s Verve album launch took place at the historic Theatre du Chatelet, packed with 1700 fans. Such was the success that Montreux Jazz Festival immediately booked them and now they arrive in London for an exclusive concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Tigran's record release “A Fable” on Verve, shot to No. 1 in the jazz charts. It is a dynamic solo piano collection, with lyrical songs that range from gracefully reﬁned pieces to energetic experiments as Tigran ﬁnds inspiration from traditional Armenian folk melodies as well as poetry.  “A Fable” is released in the UK to coincide with the Queen Elizabeth Hall concert.

Will "Boom Boom" be the winning song for Armenia this year at the Eurovision Song Contest in Germany? Watch and vote on 10th and 14th May, 2011.

This year, Emmy will represent Armenia in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Emmy grew up in a family where music and art has always played a key role. She got famous already at a very young age and became an idol for many children. She studied music professionally at the Sayat-Nova Musical School, “Emmy B" Producer Center's Vocal Studio and Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas in Jazz-Vocal Department.

As a solo singer, and as a former member of the music group Hayer, Emmy has toured the whole world and won uncountable awards. At the age of 10 she won the Best Singer Award for the Song Funny Rain in the Asup Song Competition. Emmy is record-breaker with her collection of Grand-Prixs and First Prizes won in international music contests and festivals in Armenia, Cyprus, Russia, Syria, Germany, Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Georgia and the Czech Republic. Emmy also runs the Emmy-B Production Center, which is aimed at discovering new talents in Armenia.

She released 3 albums, 20 music videos, more than 60 songs and hosted several popular TV shows. Recently Emmy had a solo concert in Yerevan and released her new album.
Victory in Eurovision Song Contest 2011 is her next and the most essential goal to achieve this year.
Emmy will dedicate her performance on the Eurovision Song Contest stage to her father’s Davit Bejanyan’s memory.

CD SINGLE ON EARMUSIC - FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Hamburg based earMUSIC, the international pop rock label of entertainment Group Edel, is proud to announce the release of the debut CD single by WhoCares on May 6th 2011. All rock fans surfing the internet are already aware of the many rumours and semi-official news about this music project -one that simply seemed "too exciting to be true".

What hides behind this new band name is in fact the renewed musical union between legendary Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan, with none other than Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi: the undisputed master of heavy guitar riffs.

The duo has recorded two brand new songs with the intent to support the rebuilding of a music school in Gyumri, Armenia. Both Gillan and Iommi have spent a lot of time in Armenia, fallen in love with the country and the people and have dedicated a lot of work to a nation still shocked after the earthquake that struck Armenia on December 7, 1988 at 11:41am.

The collaboration of Gillan and Iommi, who have worked together before on the Sabbath album "Born Again", is in itself an incredible news for all rock and metal fans and will be the best of surprises to get to know who is completing the band:

None other than Jon Lord on keyboard ("Mr. Hammond", partner with Gillan on all the Deep Purple classics), Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, legendary bass player Jason Newsted and guitar player Linde Lindström are also featured on the two new songs.

There is no doubt that this is the biggest ever super-band to release new material in 2011. WhoCares will release the 2 new songs on digital download and limited edition CD single on May 6th 2011: "Out of My Mind" (and epic hard rock classic, destined to remain in time as a hard rock milestone) and "Holy Water". The CD single will also contain the video clip of "Out Of My Mind" and a 40-minute documentary that shows Gillan's and Iommi's involvement with the Armenia cause over the years.

Ian Gillan said: "The idea came as Tony and I flew back from Yerevan together after being inspired by the enthusiasm of everyone there to get this thing done. It was brilliant working with Tony again after all these years; he makes life easy for a singer. The other guys need no introduction do they…"

Tony Iommi added: ""Some twenty years ago when the call came, I thought, well at least I've helped, but it was going to Armenia and seeing the actual devastation caused by the earthquake that really made me realise that funds were still needed. Despite all the money that was raised last time, here was a music school doing their best, forgotten, in basic tin sheds. After the warmth and honour bestowed upon us during our visit, we just had to help make a difference and get the school re-built. And what better way than to hook up with some of rock's greatest players and my old mate Ian, both an honour and a pleasure. "

Music of Armenia Discovers Hayk Melikyan

When and how did you start with music?
I remember my first steps in the School after Al. Hekimyan when I was just six. I fell in love with my first teacher: I exactly remember how her tender fingers were helping mine to play correctly on piano keyboard. I was impatiently waiting for the end of the lesson in order to receive the deserved chocolate from my teacher. I was very attracted with the recordings of prominent pianists. After listening to the music plaid by them I was running to my piano in order to start to improvise, which was very often lasting more than an hour. I was improvising according to the listened melodies and was imitating the composer’s “pianism.” To be honest, I was enjoying it very much, it was charging me, giving powerful energy and satisfaction.

Do you have favourite composers and why?
I cannot point out any certain composer. I think there are no good or bad composers. All of them have composed and compose according to some inspiration and the demand of expression. I would rather say that it’s a matter of understanding. One should perform the work trying to express that inspiration of the composer. It can be majestic, sorrowful, cruel, attractive, stressing, scaring, pressing or just exciting. I am very interested in the 20th century and contemporary music, in the works which are being composed while we are talking, as all these contemporary works express today’s horizon. I do like being the first performer of piano works, where I frequently express myself as a co-author and feel that the freedom has no boundaries.

When did you start with contemporary music?
In 2000 I was awarded with the 2nd prize at the International Piano Competition “Premio Valentino Bucchi” in Rome, Italy. This Competition concentrates on the 20th century music. That was my first big winning experience which promoted much my interest towards that Music. I was curious to discover the compositional technologies of the 20th century, the language, the rhythm and feeling of the time, the expression of the individualities of composers in their works, the notion of “prepared piano,” the combination of electronic sounds and piano, etc. It is of big importance to me to propagate the contemporary music which poses unique challenges and goals for the performer and the audience. In 2008 I was granted with the prestigious award after the world-known pianist Samson Francois within the prominent Orleans International Piano Competition in France. I had a privilege of receiving the Award directly from the widow of Samson Francois. This Competition is dedicated to the contemporary music, too. The works of K.Stockhausen, I.Stravinsky, A.Scriabin, G.Ligeti, L.Berio and many others were also performed within that Competition. I am always filled with proud performing and presenting Armenian piano music to the world audience. I play the works of T. Mansouryan, H. Dellalyan, A. Babadjanyan, A. Khachatryan, L. Saryan, E. Mirzoyan and many other Armenian composers with a deep inspiration.

What inspires or motivates you?
I’ll be short in answering this question: my motivation is Love. As regarding the inspirations, it just can be a delicious dinner, orange chocolate, attractive collection of a world-known couturier, an exhibition, surprising rendez-vous, etc.

Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming plans?
The soonest concert will take place in Nicosia, Cyprus, on April 15. It is organized by “Pharos” Art Center. I am going to present a program of the 20th century and contemporary music, which includes the works by L.Berio, T.Takemitsu, A.Part, H.Dellalyan, A.Babadjanyan and I.Stravinsky. Afterwords, following my Armenian concerts, I am invited to perform at “O/MODERNT” International Festival in Stockholm, Sweden. This time the Festival is dedicated to J.S.Bach and will include the works of Bach and many others who have special compositions dedicated to or written on “B-A-C-H” motive. I will be performing the works of A.Casella, A.Schoenberg, L.Dallapiccola, P.Dessau. In addition to the world premiere of four composers, I will also present my own composition which is entitled “Piano Triptych J.S.Bach in Memoriam.” And of course, I’ll be traditionally visiting France, Belgium and the Netherlands for my summer-autumn concert season performances.
It is worth mentioning one of the upcoming plans which are of great importance to me: the Call for Applications for Armenian Composers, which is a unique chance and motivation for Armenian composers from all over the world to write and submit new compositions, which I am planning to perform within my concerts and publish after the final selection of the Applications. I am happy to share that we are continuing to receive many interesting works from the different parts of the world.
There are numerous other plans, including new CD releases, which I’ll be happy to share next time. I want to thank you for this wonderful opportunity and for initiating “Music of Armenia!”

An Encounter With Dianne Goolkasian-Rahbee

As I met Dianne Goolkasian-Rahbee in her hotel lobby, I extended my hand to greet her. My offer was instantly dismissed as she grabbed and embraced me as my own grandmother might do. I suddenly felt at home again, casting aside my adopted formal English veneer.

The internationally acclaimed Armenian-American composer was in London presenting a concert of her works for two pianos. Coming together to perform these works were Diane Andersen and Nadine Delsaux.

The first thing that struck me about Dianne was her brilliant blue eyes which express a vibrant intelligence. This spark, teamed with a cheeky but warm smile, make Dianne instantly likeable. “Hello” she said. “My name is Dianne…..or Anahid* backwards…..”

Dianne was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on Feb 9 1938. She started playing the piano at an early age, funding her own musical education through waitressing. She graduated at The Julliard School as a piano major and later at the Mozarteum in Salzberg, Austria. Rejecting the nerves and pressurised lifestyle that came with being a concert pianist, she opted instead to compose and teach. She has written a large variety of works for piano solo, instrumental ensembles, percussion and voice as well as orchestral pieces. Until recently, she had been little known within the Armenian community though her music has been performed in more than twenty-two countries, including England, France, Belgium, Austria, Germany, Hungary, the U.S., Canada, Japan, and China.

I was eager to know where her love of music came from. “My mother” she said. Her mother, the daughter of Armenian tailors, was born in New York. She describes her as a “gifted and wonderful” violinist and although she took lessons as a child, her parents did not encourage her to pursue a career in music. Dianne’s father, a survivor of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, was not musical but, nonetheless, he was “a brilliant man – a pharmacist and inventor who was always building and creating things”. Most of the family on her father’s side, however, died in the genocide. Only his grandmother, mother and two of her four children survived. Dianne’s father vividly described how, under Turkish orders, Armenian men, women, and children were forced to flee their homes in Turkey and were deported hundreds of miles toward the Syrian Desert. On these death marches, Kurds or Turks would regularly try to steal the children from their parents. They said, “They’re not going to survive so why don’t you give them to us, at least they’ll have a chance to live”. She explained that one night a Turkish man wanted to take her father, who was 5 at the time, with his sister. His mother said to him, “If you take us all I will be your slave, I will do anything you want”. The man agreed, taking the four of them. He fed them and clothed them and Dianne’s grandmother even bore him two children (a fact that the family did not know about until Dianne’s father penned his memories at the age of 84). When the eldest child was old enough to be left without her care, she packed everything up one day, while he was at work and asked the neighbours “to thank him for everything” but they had to leave. From there they went to join family in America.

When I asked Dianne what the Armenian youth of today has to do to preserve the memory of the genocide, she reveals “it seems to me that there is more empathy right now than I have ever been aware of for the genocide among the youth. There are all these groups that are suddenly becoming vocal about it”. She puts this down to the increasing access to and popularity of the internet. “Connecting with Armenians online across the globe makes them feel stronger as Armenians”.

One critic has referred to Dianne’s work as “a compositional style in which neo-classicism and neo-romanticism meet, along with an ethnic flavour - the influence of Armenian”. Dianne attributes this “ethnic” essence to the fact that “Armenian music was part of family life – it was always there. I am proud to be Armenian: it is a beautiful culture and the warmth of the people is unique and special”. She used to play Armenian music on the doumbek (drum), oud (similar to the lute) and clarinet with her cousins. “It is like a person who speaks with an accent, I don’t even know I am doing it”.

Although a successful composer now, the road has not been easy and she has faced her fair share of publishers’ rejection letters. “I don’t think of myself as a composer” she modestly concedes, “I just write music”. However, she emphasises that one should “never be discouraged. Doing something you believe in is all that matters”.

When I ask Dianne what she would do without music, she says, laughing, “I couldn’t live without music. Everything I do has to do with music”. And a good thing too as Dianne and her music are certainly rare assets to the Armenian community.

Eva Rivas will represent Armenia in the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo this year with her song "Apricot Stone". She speaks to Hasmik Movsisian about her plans, ambitions and dreams. Find out more about Eva in the below interview given exclusively to Music Of Armenia.

Where do you currently live and work?
I am currently based in Armenia where I am preparing for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 in Oslo. I am studying English and Armenian. I’m also working with a voice coach.

Do you think you will devote your entire life and career only to singing (music) or do you have other plans too?
I am currently studying at the South State University (in Rostov) in the World Economics faculty, but I don’t think that there will be a time when I am an Economist. Singing is the main passion in my life and has been since I was a child. All of my dreams and desires have always been connected with music.

Who, in the music world do you look up to and see as your idol and would like your music career to be like their careers?
I have four people who I have always looked up to. First, I have always admired Michael Jackson’s talent. I also always listened to Whitney Houston and Christina Aguilera, and I considered their music to be educational. Now, my idol is Lara Fabian. She has amazingly beautiful and strong voice. She doesn’t only sing, she tells a story from her heart which I think is the key to her success. I also want to sing that way, telling a story.

Is there one musician that you would like to collaborate with (in a duet) in your music career?
I would like to sing with Charles Aznavour. He is a living legend.

What music do you like listening to and do you have one all time favourite song?
I don’t have an all time favourite song. I like to think of myself as a musical gourmet. I can listen to all types of music and can hear that special something in all of them. It also depends on my mood.

Do you personally like "Apricot Stone" song or do you only think it is a good commercial song and a good choice?
Of course I love it!

Do you think you (Armenia) have a chance of winning this year's Eurovision Song Contest or at least being in top 5 and why?
I think I have a great chance to win ESC. I have an excellent song, good voice, a professional group, a bright personality and I am going to have an amazing show!

Who in your opinion from the Armenian musicians who in the past represented Armenian in the Eurovision Song Contest gave the best performance overall and why?
I can honestly say that Sirusho gave the best performance. I think her performance was great because of the same things that will make my performance great.

Is there an Armenian musician you wish to work with?
I would like to work with Charles Aznavour, and I am looking forward to working with Jivan Gasparian.

Who is your biggest and perhaps only hero in life?
I have to say that my parents are my only heroes. I love them very much and I always try to be like them.

Is there anything you regret doing or not having done yet?
No, I don’t see any point in having regrets. I always like to look forward and not back.

Is there anything that you want to do and you know that you will definitely do one day?
I want to go to the top of Mount Ararat. I have a friend who has done it and he has promised that he will take me when I am ready.

Do you have a favourite quotation? Could you tell us?
My favourite quotation is from Caesar, ‘Come, see, win’

Do you have a favourite joke? Could you tell us?
I can’t say I have a favourite joke, but I always joke with my friends.

Do you have a message for your fans?
I would like to thank my fans for all the support. I hope that you will sing "Apricot Stone" with me for maaaaaany years. This is the most important thing for me. First of all, this will be my victory. I am very happy that I was chosen to represent my native country. Of course, I understand that this is also a GREAT responsibility and I would like you to know that I am full of strength and confidence, I will perform at the highest level and make you all proud of me.

On 21 January 2009 a new website was launched for lovers of Armenian music.

Music Of Armenia will promote all musicians and music related to Armenia. It will inform its audience about upcoming concerts, shows, album releases, music videos, etc.

We had the following interview with Hasmik Movsisian, the energetic person behind this project.

Tell us about Music of Armenia.
Music of Armenia has four aims: To promote and spread the word about Armenian music and musicians. To donate musical instruments to schools across many of the disadvantaged regions of Armenia. To host free concerts for disadvantaged children in Armenia and to eventually grant scholarships to talented budding musicians to study music at a university in Armenia’s capital Yerevan.

How did the idea of having a website about Armenian music come to your mind?
I started a group on Facebook called Armenian Music and Musicians where I wanted to share my passion about Armenian music with the world. Very soon the group was proving to be a success and I was getting approached by musicians and group members. They were thanking me for the group and asking me to promote their music in the group and that is where the idea of the website came about. I decided to create the website to be able to help musicians and reach a bigger audience.

Does it have any similarities with any existing Armenian website?
Before I started the entire project, I did a thorough research and I found out that there was no other website which offered what Music of Armenia offers to its visitors, which encouraged me even more to go ahead with the website. It is the first website of its kind. The website aims to promote musicians and music of Armenian origin regardless of their fan base, popularity or genre of music. It gives the equal chance to all of the artistes to promote their talent(s) and music.

Is it going to be a place for listening to Armenian music and knowing more about the musicians themselves, or are there any other interesting features involved?
There is a lot more to the website than just listening to music and reading the profiles of well known musicians or discovering new ones. The fans or visitors will also be able to find out about the latest concerts and performances, upcoming album releases and watch music videos. The website is also aiming to bring the Armenian musicians together and so musicians will be able to browse through jobs in the Armenian music industry and get contacts of production and label companies. The visitors can also find a venue for their party, hire a party management company to organise the party and also hire DJ’s. So the website covers almost every aspect of the industry and as the website’s popularity grows there will be new features in the future as well.

How are you resolving any copyright issues stemming from the use of music material?
All the materials on the website were approved either by the musicians or their management team. The materials are sent to us via email with the official consent for the music, videos and any other materials to be used in Music of Armenia.

What are the criteria for musicians to have a profile on your website? Do you think you will be eventually hosting non-Armenian music?
Only credible musicians can have profiles. The minimum requirement is one music video and an album or they have to be working on an album now which will be released soon. Another restriction is that the musician has to be of Armenian origin or if they are not then they have to specialise in Armenian music. Yes, there will be “non-Armenian” music on the website. It is open to all genres as long as the musicians performing the music are of Armenian origin and they do want to contribute to the Armenian music industry.

How long have you been working on the project in actual terms? Was it an old idea or relatively new one?
I got the idea quite recently; I started the entire project in early October 2008. It was unplanned and unexpected but as soon as I came up with the idea, I started spending all my spare time and effort on the project.

The Facebook group which was prepared as grounds for the launching of the website has become another big reality. It has some two thousand members. How did you attract them all? Did you do some marketing or the subject itself attracted the members to it? Do you intend to keep the group or it should go in the shadows?
Yes, it is a happy and vibrant group to be a member of. I think the reason why it is doing well is because I put all my passion into it. I also think that the group name itself attracted many members. At the very early stages, I used to contact “Admins” of other Armenian music groups on Facebook and ask them to promote my group, in return I would promote theirs. The group was the start to the entire project so I will carry on having it and looking after it until Facebook closes!

Do you think you can cover also Western Armenian music besides the mainstream Armenian originated materials?
Music of Armenia will promote the Armenian music or musicians from different corners of the world and will promote it to all the lovers of Armenian music worldwide. It is not limited to only Armenians or music from Armenia.

How is your cooperation with other websites going?
It is crucial for me to work with other websites because Music of Armenia is very versatile and so I cannot accommodate it all by myself. For example, the fans will be directed to external radio stations and websites to listen to music or purchase music. I have to admit that I had a positive response from other Armenian music websites and so I am open to work with other websites to make the project as successful as possible.

Do you think your message is reaching wherever/whoever you were initially planning to reach?
I have already managed to achieve what I wanted to. My main aim was to launch the website and allow people to find it and make use of it. I have to admit I have had an overwhelming response to it. Musicians are pleased to hear that there is such a website to give them the chance to share their love for music with the world and their fans, and this kind of response is already a success to me.

Are you doing this by yourself or do you have a business partner?
I am working on the project entirely by myself with some help from friends. I also had help from ABi Associates. They are a UK based business consultancy company who were the first to hear my idea and encouraged me into it. They also oversaw the first steps of my project. And so I would like to take this opportunity and thank them for their help and advice but most of all their positive and encouraging attitude.

How do you define the success of such work? Is it by the number of website hits per week/month?
On an emotional level, I would say that even if only one person makes use of the website but they find it absolutely useful and they are a huge fan of it, the website is already a success for me because I did something that made someone happy. On a business level, yes, it would depend on the number of website visits and also how much the musicians and fans make use of it.

Tell us about yourself.
I was born in Yerevan but I grew up between the Czech Republic (Prague) and London. I am a very positive person. I think people should always do or at least try to do what they have passion for and what they believe in. I am very determined and hard working, and do not give up easily. I know what I want from life and I do my best to always get the things I want. Ever since I started studying languages, I knew I wanted to have a career in the government. That changed recently when I decided to become a PR executive in the music industry. I think I want to spend the next 20 years in the music or entertainment industry and return to the government full time later in my life. Who knows, maybe one day I could be the Ambassador to Armenia and spread the Armenian culture through music.
